figure worked as an advocate for gay rights for most of his life.

* Frank Kameny 1925 - 2011
Kameny was fired from his government job in 1958 for being a homosexual. For the rest of his life, he worked as an advocate for gay rights. He co-founded the Mattachine Society in Washington, DC – an early gay civil rights group. He was also the first openly gay candidate to run for Congress - a true pioneer for LGBT people.
